Smart-MOTION®

A completed Innovate UK Biomedical Catalyst programme integrating wearable smart textile technology into musculoskeletal monitoring and rehabilitation — delivered through a high-impact industry-academic consortium.

£480kInnovate UK Funding Awarded

Why This Programme Was Important

Challenging an intermittent and observational model.

Traditional musculoskeletal pathways rely on infrequent clinic visits, lab-based gait analysis, bulky orthoses and subjective observation. Smart-MOTION® explored how continuous, real-world monitoring could enable earlier intervention, personalised rehabilitation, and regenerative-aligned care.

What Was Developed

From smart textile to clinical insight.

Macro view of woven smart-textile material

Smart Wearable Garments

Adapted smart-textile garments capturing joint movement and biomechanical patterns during everyday activity.

Continuous Monitoring

Longitudinal insight beyond intermittent clinic visits — real-world data, captured outside the laboratory.

Clinically-Actionable Insight

Translation of raw wearable data into early markers, recovery progress and personalised intervention triggers.

The Consortium

A consortium led by clinical reality.

Conceived and led by MSK Doctors, drawing directly on extensive experience in managing complex musculoskeletal conditions across both private and NHS settings.
